UK Fluid Art Retreat on the South Coast a Huge Success

Our second  UK Fluid Art Event and our very first retreat was held on the South Coast in Dorset. A stones through from Old Harry Rocks in Studland, one of the UK’s most picturesque seaside locations. We truly were overwhelmed by the positive feedback following this event, we just know that we can’t stop here.

It was wonderful to have an immediate connection with so many like-minded people. Right from the first evening when we sat around to share our art and experiences, we knew friendships would be formed for a long time to come.

The weekend itself was packed full of talks and workshops, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Friday evening we had a ‘Show and tell’ with complimentary bubbly and a home cooked meal. Saturday morning kicked off with breakfast followed by an inspirational walk, paying close attention to our wonderful location, looking closely at the colour of the sky, sand and sea, so we could bring a better understanding of colour and composition to our seascape workshop, where Julie explained how to mix and de-saturate colours to gain depth in a fluid art seascape.

Chris’s workshop on colour theory was packed full of informative information. Chris looked at how the colour wheel worked, the psychology behind colours, mixing custom colours and how to avoid ‘mud’. These themes were carried over onto Chris’ second workshop where everyone poured with intention, using silicone swipes and placing colour where they wanted them to appear on the canvas.

"Thank you so much Chris and Julie, it’s been a fantastic retreat. Thanks for everything you’ve done, including cooking delicious meals and cakes for us. It was very helpful in terms of learning loads about fluid art."

On Saturday evening, Julie gave an inspiring marketing presentation on how to define what you do as an artist, why it’s important to find your own voice and advice on how to write an artists statement and bio, as well as understanding different markets, how to communicate with your target market and using social media.

For the Sunday workshop, Julie and Chris demonstrated a flip cup and a straight pour with students choosing one of these techniques to create their 3rd painting.

We learnt many things from our first event in Newent, which we implemented in our weekend retreat, however there is always room for improvement and for our next event we will be holding our retreat in a bigger space with more time given to each workshop.

If you are looking for a new creative outlet in 2025, fluid art can be challenging and rewarding. By coming together, new friendships can be established where people can share their art, learn from one another and have a great deal of fun!

"100% loved it. You never stop learning. It was great to get tips & hints from members as well. Fabulous group of artists, so lovely to get away and be immersed in something I love doing for 3 days."
